A hamburger isn't really that unhealthy on its own. But it crosses the line when Peyou slap one on a white bread bun, pile on the soggy bacon, and soak it in mayo. (Why does everyone put mayonnaise on my burger anyway? That's just gross.)
Now I will present to you four ways to make your hamburger healthier, courtesy of the crew over here at Carson City Fitness Systems:
1. Spinach. Spinach is high in iron, calcium, fiber, and beta-carotene. Use spinach on top of your burgers instead of regular lettuce. Or else mix chopped spinach right into the meat before you form the patties.
2. Walnuts and Almonds. Finely chopped nuts won't be noticeable in your burger, but they will add some great fiber and anti-oxidants. Studies have shown that adding these nuts to your diet can even lower your cholesterol levels. (Another trick is to spread a thin layer of almond butter on the bun.)
3. Black Beans. You can use them whole, and some people do, but I don't like it. Run the beans through a food processor and mix the paste right into the meat. (It's true! You CAN fool yourself into eating healthy!) Beans add super-good-for-you fiber and calcium to your meal.
4. Peppers. You can chop up orange, red, or yellow peppers to mix into your burgers before you huck them onto the grill. Chop them up very finely and they add just a bit of texture, along with vitamin C and fiber. And we can all use more vitamin C and fiber!
Now get out there and start up the grill. Flame on!
